BAHAWALPUR, Oct 9: A three-member Commonwealth observers’ team visited Bahawalpur on Tuesday.

District returning officer Badaruz Zaman Chattha briefed the team, led by West Indies Chylon Johis, about the arrangements to hold free, fair and transparent elections in the district.

The observers expressed their satisfaction over polling arrangements.

ELECTION MEETINGS: Over 100 election meetings were held by candidates of different political and religious parties before the deadline till Tuesday midnight in the city and its adjoining areas.

The candidates covered maximum areas, mohallahs, bastis and rural areas to approach their voters and motivate them in their favour.

The candidates could not generate the traditional enthusiasm among masses during the 25 days of their election campaign due to some limitations imposed by the election commission.

Moreover, most of the party chiefs could not visit the city for the canvassing of their respective candidates. However, PPP parliamentarian group chief Makhdoom Amin Fahim, PML-QA’s Punjab president Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, PTI chief Imran Khan and AQP chief Gen Mirza Aslam Beg (retired) spoke the public meetings.

Leaders of National Alliance Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari and PML-N leaders could not visit the area.

MELAS: Arrangements have been finalized to hold ‘Jamhuriat melas’ in government schools from Oct 18 to 25.
