PESHAWAR, Oct 7: The NWFP government has warned that certain elements in the tribal areas, who are trying to impede or resist the proposed local bodies elections and implementation on Fata reforms, would be dealt with severely.
“Whosoever indulged in such illegal activities, anywhere in Fata, would be proceeded against under the law of the land,” a government spokesman said in a handout issued here Monday.
The spokesman strongly reacted to the threatening posture of certain “disgruntled” elements, issuing statements and so-called decrees to put on fire the houses of, and impose penalties on, those who favour the government reforms agenda or take part in the local bodies elections.
The government has taken a strong view of their threats to pressure and intimidate the peace-loving people of Fata, he said, adding that instigating the people for resistance against the government or any of its decision would in no way be tolerated.
“Any such effort, in fact, is tantamount to challenging the writ of the government and the government would never hesitate from coming hard on such elements,” the spokesman said.
LAW & ORDER: A meeting, presided over by the NWFP governor here on Monday, discussed law and order situation in the province and adjoining tribal areas.
The meeting also reviewed the arrangements made for peaceful conduct of the Oct 10 elections in the province as well as Fata. The home secretary and the IGP informed the meeting of the arrangements so far made to ensure foolproof security and safety of polling stations and other places.
The governor, while expressing satisfaction over the arrangements, directed the police and other law enforcement agencies to remain in a state of high alert.”
He said that overall command of the safety and security, would rest with the police and the IGP would be the overall in charge of things.
