KARACHI, Feb 19: An activist of the Pakistan People’s Party was gunned down and his woman companion wounded in a Surjani Town locality on Saturday, police said.

They said that 50-year-old Naimatullah alias Mohan Bengali was going in his car along with 25-year-old Laiba when two men on a motorbike opened fire on the moving vehicle near Khuda Ki Basti within the Surjani Town police remit.

“Naimatullah sustained two bullet wounds in the head and died on the spot,” said Surjani Town SHO Sub-Inspector Mussaddiq Rafiq.

“The woman accompanying him sustained a bullet wound in the abdomen and was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. Both assailants wearing helmets, escaped.”

The victim was a local leader of the ruling PPP, he said, adding that he was the father of eight and worked as a property dealer.

“We still don’t know about the relationship between the victim and the wounded woman,” said the area SHO. “The motive and people behind the attack are not yet known but initial investigations suggest that the deceased had a property dispute with some people.”

He said though the victim’s family suspected no particular group of involvement in the killing, they believed that he was killed due to his political association.

“Investigations are in a very early stage and it may take time to reach any conclusion,” the SHO said, adding that an FIR would be registered after the burial of the victim.

Two bodies found in Nazimabad

The bodies of two young men were found in a Nazimabad locality on Saturday, officials said.

They said some sanitary workers saw the bodies in a drain and approached some area people who finally informed the police about the bodies.

“The bodies were found in a nullah in the Jehangirabad area,” said Sub-Inspector Ali Raza, the SHO of the Rizvia police station.

“The bodies bore torture marks and were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the post-mortem report suggested that they had been strangled.”

He said the victims, in their mid-20s, were clad in shirts and jeans, but nothing was found in their possession that could help trace their identities.

“We also questioned some area people who believed that the victims were not the residents of their area and that they had been murdered somewhere else,” added the SHO.
