ISLAMABAD, Feb 14: A brother-in-law of former federal minister for religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi has moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for post-arrest bail in the Haj corruption case.

Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi on Monday directed the special investigation unit of FIA to present the record of the case in two weeks.

The FIA registered the case against Abdullah Mehmood Khokhar on December 20 after Raja Tariq Mehood alleged during the proceedings of the Haj scam case in the Supreme Court that he had taken Rs200,000 from him promising to arrange Haj quota for him.

The complainant said Khokhar promised him Hajj quota for 110 pilgrims in June 2009 and he had to pay him Rs20,000 per person. Mr Tariq further alleged that he had to pay Rs2 million after receiving the quota that was never provided.

The trial court on February 1 dismissed the plea of Khokhar for after-arrest bail observing it could not be extended in the case of heinous charges and offences affecting the public and society adversely.

In his bail plea, Khokhar said both the charges registered under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 163 (taking gratification for exercise of personal influence with public servant) were bailable.

He said the delay of 18 month in the registration of an FIR after the alleged offence indicted the hidden intentions of the complainant. He said the only evidence available against him was a CD that could easily be manipulated and fabricated by any expert as observed by superior courts.
