RAWALPINDI, Feb 13: Former Sindh governor and president of Al-Shifa Eye Trust Lt-Gen (retd) Jahandad Khan was laid to rest here on Sunday. Jahandad Khan, 83, died at the Combined Military Hospital in the morning. He left behind a daughter and a son.

He was buried on the premises of the Al-Shifa Eye Trust, located at Jhelum Road near Ayub National Park. The funeral was held at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.

PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, former army chief Gen (retd) Aslam Baig and people from all walks of life attended the funeral. People paid rich tribute to Jahandad Khan for his selfless services in mitigating the suffering of vulnerable people.

Lt-Gen (retd) Jahandad Khan was born in Malhoo village of Attock in 1929. He led an illustrious career in Pakistan Army spanning over 33 years and retired as lieutenant general in 1984. He served as governor of Sindh from April 1984 to January 1987.

Recipient of Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), Sitara-i-Bisalat and Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Civil) awards, Jahandad Khan was also conferred with many international awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of prevention of blindness at national and international levels.

He was the founder of Al-Shifa Trust eye hospitals in Rawalpindi, Kohat, Sukkur, Quetta and Muzaffarabad.

He was author of many books, including “Pakistan Leadership Challenges”. He remained chairman of Pakistan Red Crescent Society and helped it to emerge as a leading humanitarian organisation of the country.

The Qul for the deceased will be held at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Lt-Gen (retd) Hamid Javaid has been nominated as new president of Al-Shifa Eye Trust.
