Security alert after Lahore shrine blast

KARACHI, Feb 4: Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza on Friday ordered the police to chalk out a fool-proof security plan for shrines in the province with the help of the auqaf department and install surveillance cameras and walk-through gates at the sensitive places.

Condemning the Thursday blast at a shrine in Lahore, the minister directed the provincial police chief to ensure security around mosques, Imambargahs, major shrines and other religious places in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur regions and keep the entire force fully prepared to avert any untoward incident during religious processions and events planned for the Eid Miladun Nabi.—PPI

KU closed today

The registrar of the University of Karachi, Prof Kaleem Raza Khan, has announced that the university and its affiliated colleges will remain closed on Feb 5 in connection with Kashmir Day.

The registrar of the university has also announced that the candidates appearing in BCom examinations at the KU can use the gate No1 and the Maskan Gate of the university. The candidates are not allowed to bring their vehicles inside the campus.—PPI

NED convocation on 19th

THE registrar of the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Engineer Javed Aziz Khan, has announced that the convocation for 2011 will be held on Feb 19 on the main campus of the varsity.

The degrees will be awarded in the following disciplines/programmes: BE degrees (batch 2006-07) civil, mechanical, electrical, computer and information systems, textile, electronics, industrial and manufacturing, urban, telecommunications, petroleum, marine, automotive, material and chemical engineering.

The governor of Sindh and chancellor of the university, Dr Ishratul Ibad, will preside over the convocation.

The successful students who have not yet received their degrees are advised to apply for admission to the convocation on the prescribed application form available at the convocation counter at the admissions centre.

The last date for submission of the form is Feb 10.

BBSYDP tests

Some 60,000 candidates will appear in the admission tests for various training courses under the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Programme (BBSYDP) on Feb 6.

This was announced by the National Testing Service Pakistan (NTSP) here on Friday.

It said that the tests would be conducted under the auspices of the NTSP.

The tests would be conducted simultaneously in Karachi and 22 other districts of the province.

The successful candidates would be eligible to participate in the training courses of the BBSYDP.

The tests would be the biggest in the province with almost 60,000 candidates appearing in it.—APP
