Published October 6, 2002

GILGIT, Oct 5: Law and order will be maintained at all costs in Northern Areas and nobody will be allowed to take law into their hands.

Northern Areas Chief Secretary Maj (retd) Muhammad Fazil Durrani stated this while speaking to policemen at the 30th passing out parade held here on Saturday.

Special measures were being taken to ensure foolproof security in the region, he said, adding that the Northern Areas police department would be divided into prosecution, investigation and general duty branches to improve the police performance.

Mr Durrani told the police officers and jawans that a 129kv diesel generator would be installed and a water tank and a dispensary would be set up at the Police Recruits Training Centre, besides allocating funds from the ADP for the construction of a staff township for the police.

More than 69 police recruits were declared successful in the training.

AFFILIATION:By the end of March 2002, all the academic institutions of Northern Areas will be affiliated with the Karakoram International University, KIU sources said here on Saturday.

The decision was taken at a meeting, attended by Northern Areas Legislative Council Speaker Sahib Khan, Education Ministry’s Joint Secretary Aleem Mohammad, the finance secretary and the acting registrar of the KIU.

The sources said that meetings of the university representatives and the syndicate would be held regularly to discuss the matters pertaining to affiliation and academic sessions.
