HYDERABAD, Oct 5: A large number of the primary and high school teachers, including the female teachers, staged a demonstration outside the local press club on Saturday in connection with the World Teachers Day.

Speaking to the rally, the leaders of various teachers associations, including Kazi Aminuddin, Ismail Laghari and Azam Gopang, said it was for the first time that the teachers were celebrating the World Teachers Day without any patronage from the government.

They demanded that the best teachers award for each district, announced by the government, should be increased.

They condemned the violence against the teachers and students in Karachi and demanded that those arrested by the police should be released without delay.

Meanwhile, the office-bearers of the Sindh Teachers Association have also condemned the police violence against the teachers of the Karachi University

At a meeting held in connection with the World Teachers Day, the office bearers of the association demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

The meeting demanded the dismissal of the police officials involved in the incident.

The meeting resolved to observe complete strike in the university on Oct 7, to protest against the attack on the teachers. Speaking at the meeting, the president of the association, Dr Shamsuddin Shaikh, said the educational reforms would deprive the teachers of their role in the affairs of the universities.

He appealed to the president to reconsider the recommendations of the steering committee of the task force on higher education and to appoint a commission headed by a judge of the Supreme Court to carry out in-depth study of reforms.
