PESHAWAR, Jan 31: A deputy superintendent of police, three constables and a civilian were killed in two blasts here on Monday.
A suicide bomber struck a police van on Kohat Road at about 9am, killing DSP Rasheed Khan, his driver Ameen Shah, constable Sher Rehman and passerby Khan Mohammad. DawnA police officer told that the DSP was going to Badbher area in the suburbs when the bomber hit his vehicle which had slowed down because the road was rough. An official of the bomb disposal squad told that the head and one leg of the bomber had been found, besides ball bearings and pieces of suicide vest. The man, he said, was carrying about seven kilograms of explosives.
Rahamdad, a fruit vendor, said he heard a huge blast and saw people running in different directions.
People injured in the blast included Mohammad Raheel of Bazar Kalan, Furqan, a college student, Khan Gul of Darmangi of Darmani, Jan Agha of Shah Kas Jamrud, Karim Khan, Mohammad Islam of Darra Adam Khel and Noor Ali of Garhi Qamar Din. They were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital where two of them were said to be in serious condition.
In another blast in an area within the limits of Peshtakhara police station, policeman Nasir Khan was killed, while Aadil Khan, Moeed and Ghani Rehman were injured.
The blast was caused by one kilogram of explosives packed in a plastic container planted along a road and detonated by remote control.
Police have registered cases but no arrests were made till late evening.
The DSP, who died in the blast, was laid to rest in his hometown of Swabi and the bodies of other policemen were taken to their villages in Mardan.
