ISLAMABAD, Jan 17: Violence and terrorism took 4,678 lives in the country during the first 10 months of the past year.

A study, carried out by the Strengthening Participatory Organisation, a rights-based civil society organisation, titled: “Trail of Tragedy: A Chronology of Violence in Pakistan 2010” presents a chronology of incidents during the period.

It covers suicide attacks, bomb blasts, ambushes, target killings, deaths caused by military operations, casualties in attacks on security forces and US drone attacks in tribal areas.

Suicide attacks, bomb blasts and other attacks claimed 1,801 lives. Drones killed 544 suspected insurgents and the frequency of attacks increased when compared to the same period of 2009. About 2,060 insurgents were killed in military operations.

The study says: “This is not only an account of incidents or calculation of casualties caused by terrorism and militancy but also an attempt to draw a big picture of the overall context in which we are living.”
