MMA to repeal amendments

Published October 2, 2002

SWABI, Oct 1: The MMA leaders have rejected the constitutional amendments incorporated into the Constitution by the present regime and said they would do away with the same after coming into power.

Speaking at election rallies at Topi, Swabi ground, Bamkhel and Shewa Adda here on Tuesday, the MMA leaders, including Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Samiul Haq, said almost all the political parties had rejected the constitutional amendments.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed said he would launch a campaign against the constitutional amendments and Gen Musharraf’s presidency both inside and outside the parliament because the general not only elected himself for five years, he also formalised army’s role in politics.

He said the six-party alliance of the religious parties would be converted into a single entity after the elections. He said planning in this regard was in final stage.

He said efforts to make Pakistan a true Islamic state would continue till the goal was achieved as the Americans and their agents here had been trying to change the Islamic identity of the country. He alleged that the present regime was following the instructions of the US.

He said the United States wanted to establish a secular society here with the help of rulers. However, he said, the MMA would not allow the Americans to implement their plans.
