SIALKOT, Sept 30: Effective political strategy and rigorous election campaign by the PPP has weakened the position of the PML-QA in the national constituency NA-114 (Pasrur city).

The PML-QA has fielded retired bureaucrat Zahid Hamid, the elder brother of former governor Shahid Hamid, against the PML-N’s Javed Iqbal Virk and Ghulam Abbas, Sialkot district PPP president and former provincial minister. An independent candidate, Khairat Husain, is also in the run.

The two major clans of the area — Rajput and Jat — are trying to win Pasrur city seat which had been a PML-N stronghold.

Besides, increasing the number of its corner meetings, the PPP has launched a full fledged election campaign.

Political observers are of the view that the PPP strategy has paid dividends as it has made the life hard for the PML-QA candidate.

The PML-QA has focused its attention on the issue of re-opening the Pasrur Sugar Mills.

Variyo family’s former federal minister Abdul Sattar, who is in the NAB custody, and his son Armughan Subhani had withdrawn their nomination papers from NA-114 in favour of the PML-QA.

The Variyo family is also busy in using its influence for the success of the PML-QA candidate. On the other hand, PPP’s Ghulam Abbas has launched a mass contact campaign to counter the Variyo’s influence.
