KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has reposed full confidence in Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in his battle for survival following the withdrawal of two coalition partners from his government.

“The Pakistan People's Party and President Asif Ali Zardari have full confidence in Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as Leader of the House and firmly stand behind him in foiling any attempt to destabilise the coalition government,” presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said in a statement released by the Bilawal House's media cell here on Monday.

He said the president had also expressed the hope that Mr Gilani would complete his five-year term, despite all the manipulations. He called the prime minister, discussed the political situation and assured him of the party's full support.

Mr Babar rejected a perception that Mr Gilani was fighting a 'lonely battle'. “The prime minister is not alone. He will not be left alone. The PPP stands behind him through thick and thin. Let there be no doubt or mistake about it”.

The spokesman told Dawn that if anybody thought he had enough support against Mr Gilani he should make a move and prove his majority in the National Assembly. “We will not let Mr Gilani down.”
