KARACHI: Two held on smuggling charges

KARACHI, Nov 11: Customs Drug Enforcement Cell has arrested two passengers at the airport following recovery of contraband drugs and foreign currency from their possession.

An official of the customs staff said a Nigerian passenger, Christopher Anayo Umeh, was intercepted as he was about to leave the country by Emirates Airlines flight EK-603. His baggage was searched which led to the recovery of 1.9 kgs of heroin. A case under Control of Narcotics Substances Act 1997 was registered.

A Pakistani, Haji Mohammad Salim Gadit, was also intercepted when he was leaving for Dubai by the same flight. He was frisked which led to recovery of US $20,000. He was booked under Customs Act 1969.

Meanwhile, at a ceremony at the Customs House, shields and cash awards were presented to the officers of two organizations which took part in extinguishing a fire that erupted on the 9th floor of the Customs House.
