Water crisis deepens in Dodanko

Published September 25, 2002

SUKKUR, Sept 24: The problem of water shortage has deepened in Dodanko village near Rohri, the suburb of Sukkur, and people have to fetch water from far-flung areas.

The EDO (education), Salehpat Ghulam Shabbir, who is a resident of the area, said a scheme was prepared in 1997 on the demand of the villagers in which water had to be drawn from Patni Waterway (Patni Minor), which is two miles away form the village.

However, he said, water resources dried up in Patni Branch after some time and the supply of water remained suspended for six months.

The water supply was also affected due to rotation in different canals by irrigation authorities and the pipeline installed for the purpose was also rusted.

He said the residents had repaired the pipeline several times and added electric motors were also short-circuited and were repaired by the people of the area.

The villagers are now demanding they should be supplied water from the Nara Canal as, according to them, this would resolve the water problem in their village and the adjoining areas.

They have also appealed to the Sindh governor and candidates of different political parties to resolve their water problem.
