Work on floating jetty plan halted

Published September 24, 2002

QUETTA, Sept 23: Taking a serious note of massive irregularities in the construction of a floating jetty in Gadani, the Balochistan government has ordered immediate stoppage of work on the project.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Coastal Development Authority here on Monday. Governor Amirul Mulk Mengal presided over the meeting.

The meeting was informed the government had approved Rs13m for the project but the authorities concerned without getting prior approval from the government changed the project and construction of a fish harbour was started. An amount of Rs51m was also spent on it illegally.

In view of the serious irregularities, the meeting decided to conduct an inquiry into the matter. It was also decided that legal action would be taken against the officials responsible.

The meeting also decided to set up two special committees in this connection which would conduct the inquiry.
