Woman prisoner commits ‘suicide’

HUB, Sept 23: A young woman allegedly committed suicide in the Gaddani jail late on Sunday night.

Police said Safia, 18, resident of Khuzdar, had burnt herself alive after sprinkling kerosene on her body in a bathroom of the jail.

She had asked the jail administration for a lantern to go to the bathroom of the women’s barrack after electricity to the prison had been suspended. In the lavatory, Safia put kerosene on her body from the lantern and burnt herself.

She was taken to the Civil Hospital, Karachi, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was handed over to her relatives.

The woman was brought to the jail from Khuzdar a few months ago after she had reportedly married Khalid in a court of Karachi, but her father lodged a case of her kidnapping.

Safia, along with her husband, was caught and handed over to the police. Later, they were sent to the Gaddani jail.

Meanwhile, her father allegedly kidnapped the sister of Khalid in revenge.

Sources said the jail administration had misbehaved with the woman who got annoyed and committed suicide.
