PPP criticizes increase in petrol prices

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: Pakistan People’s Party on Saturday condemned the increase in prices of petroleum products by 20 to 34 paisas per litre and demanded its withdrawal.

Acting secretary-general of PPP, Raza Rabbani, said in a statement that the prices of kerosene and light diesel affected the common man.

“The increase in price of diesel will not only affect the bus and wagon fares but will also affect adversely the agriculture sector which is the backbone of economy,” he said.

“The phenomenal increase will have a snowballing effect on the prices of essential commodities, including the kitchen items,” he said and added that it would make life difficult for the middle, lower middle working classes.

“It will be recalled that during 2001-02, the price of petrol was increased nine times while the price of diesel was increased 10 times.

“The policy of deregulation ensues that the oil companies maximize their profits at the cost of the common man. This is a deliberate policy adopted by a finance minister who represents international financial interests,” he said.
