Sugar cess collection ‘misused’

Published September 20, 2002

LAHORE, Sept 19: District nazims are influencing the collection of sugar cane road cess and the government must intervene to protect farmers from this highhandedness, Muhammad Ayub Chaudhry, president, Kissan Board, said here on Thursday.

“The nazims are finalizing politically expedient roads for sugar cane transportation. Though the Punjab governor recently increased the number of growers on these committees to strengthen their representative character, their efforts were being neutralized by the highhandedness of the nazimeen,” he demanded.

On papers, the district coordination officers were chairmen of the road cess committees, but nazimeen were using them for political mileage, he added.
