Badar to be indicted on 23rd

LAHORE, Sept 17: An accountability court on Tuesday fixed Sept 23 for indicting PPP secretary-general Jehangir Badar on charges of living beyond means.

In the NAB reference against him, Mr Badar has been accused of acquiring millions of rupees of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income through abuse of his position as federal minister and senator.

According to the reference, Mr Badar purchased a plot worth Rs50,000 in Rehman Villas in 1989 and sold it for Rs100,000 in 2000. He allegedly purchased a 10-Marla plot in Allama iqbal Town too, where he constructed a house at a cost of Rs350,000, which he sold in 2000.

It has been alleged in the reference that the accused purchased another house in Allama Iqbal Town for Rs2 million in 1994 and spent Rs2.5 million on its renovation. He is also accused of acquiring a a 43-Marla plot in Ali Town for Rs600,000 and gifting it to his son Zulfiqar Badar. He allegedly purchased another eight-Marla plot in the same locality and gifted that one to his son as well.

The NAB has alleged that Mr Badar purchased a 454-square-foot plot at Rehman Plaza, Queens Road, for Rs440,000 and another at Advocates Society for Rs125,000 in the name of his son.

According to the NAB charge-sheet, the accused declared Rs1.5 million of foreign exchange bearer certificates in an annual income tax return and deposited millions of rupees in his personal bank accounts from 1994 to 1999. Lastly, it has been alleged that he undertook many trips to the US, the UK, Canada, Denmark and other countries in the company of his family members, on which he spent Rs1.6 million.

Mr Badar is already being tried by the NAB for allegedly making illegal recruitments in SNGPL, PSO and OGDC as federal minister for petroleum.
