ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: Karachi Blues tightened the noose around Kohat Saturday, reducing them to 138 for seven in their second innings by the close of second day’s play in the National Junior (Under-19) Grade-I Cricket Championship match at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.

Resuming their first innings, at the overnight score of 152 for one, Karachi put on 334 for four, earning a substantial lead of 151.

Khurram Manzoor, 102 not out overnight, was dismissed after adding just four more to his score but then Daniyal Ahsan scored a brisk unbeaten 77, a knock laced with five fours and a six to boost the total. Adnan Baig contributed an undefeated 42 off just 36 balls.

Leg-spinner Waqar Ali Shah snapped up two wickets to add to the one he took Friday but proved quite expensive in conceding 108 runs.

When Kohat batted, Nadeem Anjum stroked a fluent 61 off just 63 balls. However his team-mates could not do much and kept losing their wickets cheaply and were in a precarious position when play ended.

Leggie Mohammad Ali Zafar, who had five victims in the first innings, claimed another three while Zeeshan Aziz picked up two.

A brilliant knock of 120 by left-handed opener Amjad Ali was the cornerstone of Lahore Whites’s massive tally of 350 for eight against Quetta at PCB Regional Academy Ground in Karachi. Amjad blasted 12 fours and one six in his 196-ball innings.

Salman Qadir struck a belligerent 56 off 61 balls, inclusive of four sixes and as many fours while Arshad Munir hit three fours and one in making 53 off 66 deliveries.

Quetta, who made 245 for eight in their first innings, reached 47 for one in their second essay.

The match between Karachi Whites and Rawalpindi at National Stadium appears to be heading for an exciting final day after the home team lost six for 101 in their second innings for an overall lead of 172.

Rawalpindi, resuming at 33 for no loss, were dismissed foe 206 in their first innings in reply to Karachi Whites’s 277 despite an unbeaten 74 by Shoaib Nasir, who struck eight fours and one six while facing 104 balls.

Off-spinner Aftab Ahmed Khan captured five for 104. He was ably supported by medium-pacer Tabish Khan, who claimed four for 43 in 22 overs.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore:

Islamabad were on verge of a big defeat against Lahore Blues at Lahore Country Club Ground in Muridke.

Replying to Lahore  Blues’s first  innings 277, Islamabad were skittled out for a paltry 72 and were forced to follow on.

Showing much application, Islamabad reached 144 for six in their second innings at draw of stumps. They still need 61 to avoid innings  defeat.

Meanwhile, Sheikhupura set Fata 217 for victory in their match at Sheikhupura Stadium.

Sheikhupura got a first innings lead of 97 by dismissing Fata for 177 in 61.2 overs.
