ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Saturday urged the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) to take notice of what it termed “continued and illegal incarceration” of former senator Asif Ali Zardari, and raise the matter with the government.

In a letter to the secretary general of the Inter Parliamentary Union, Mr Anders B Johnson, the party’s central co-ordinator of human rights cell, Ms Fauzia Wahab, stated that Zardari, who had been incarcerated for the past six years in 14 “fictitious and baseless cases”, was again remanded by the NAB authorities in a case, which had been “lying in cold storage for the past four years.”

“This case,” she stated, “was ... presented in the courts in ... February, 1998, in which the Senator was accused of ‘amassing wealth beyond his declared income’.”—Reporter
