KARACHI, Sept 7: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has severed total 17 illegal water connections of a number of hydrants in SITE Town, thus saving 100,000 gallons of water per day.

A spokesman for the KWSB said that in its ongoing drive against the illegal connections, operators of different illegal hydrants had taken unlawful connections of 3 to 4-inch diameters from the federal trunk main of 48-inch diameter passing through Habib Bank to Banaras.

The modus operandi adopted by two persons who were found involved in stealing water from the KWSB main pipeline was that they had connected the illegal connections taken from the main pipelines to a number of secretly built huge tanks from where they had been selling water to different factories in SITE.

Similarly, the operators of different illegal hydrants in SITE had also got unlawful connections from the 48-inch diameter pipeline, creating acute water shortage in the localities hooked to the pipeline, besides stealing water from the quota of the SITE Ltd, which is a bulk consumer of the KWSB.

He said that the huge quantity of water saved by disconnecting illegal connections of unlawful hydrants and huge tanks would help improve the supply of various localities, including Pak Colony, Ron village, Old Golimar, Baldia, Shershah, Jahanabad, PAF Masroor, Yaseenabad, Greeks Village, Tikri Village, Bath Island and adjoining areas.

The spokesman said that the campaign against illegal water connections would continue as long as all the illegal hydrants which are thriving at the expense of citizens are smashed.
