Report on Fata polls clarified

Published September 4, 2002

KOHAT, Sept 3: A report appeared in Dawn on Sept 2, stating that tribesmen in Fata will elect 12 National Assembly members on one-man one-vote basis for the first time during the forthcoming election is erroneously incorrect.

In fact, this would be for the second time that elections would be held in Fata on the basis of adult franchise following Feb 1997 elections wherein tribesmen of Fata had been given the right, for the first time, to elect their representatives on the basis of one-man one-vote.

However, this would be for the first time that 12 members for the National Assembly would be elected from Fata which earlier had eight representatives in the National Assembly.
