KARACHI Fifty-one-year-old Syed Raza Haider, assassinated on Monday evening, had been associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for over two decades, MQM leaders told Dawn.

He won a Sindh Assembly seat from an Orangi Town constituency in the 2008 general election.

Although he kept a low profile in parliamentary politics, the MQM leaders Dawn spoke to described him as “very active at the organisational level”.

The MPA was living in North Nazimabad's G Block now, but he was originally a resident of Orangi Town and had contested the Feb 18, 2008 general election from Orangi Town's PS-94 constituency. He was a former sector-in-charge of the MQM in Orangi Town.

Mr Haider did his graduation from Karachi University. He was a member of the Sindh Assembly's standing committees on the board of revenue, cooperation, local government and planning and development.

Mr Haider has left a widow, a son and a daughter. His Namaz-i-janaza would be offered on Tuesday at Jinnah Ground in Azizabad and he would be buried in the Azizabad graveyard.

MQM leader Faisal Subzwari said Mr Haider was the first MQM legislator killed in a terrorist strike.
