MARDAN, Nov 7: District tribunal judge Swabi, Abdul Matin Khan on Tuesday disqualified the Nazim of Union Council Anbar on the charge of desertion from the Pakistan Navy and announced the runner-up candidate as elected Nazim of the union council.
Mohammed Jamil was elected Nazim of the Anbar Town, a union council of Swabi district, in the local bodies election. However, his rival Saeed Khan filed a petition against him with the tribunal judge Swabi at Mardan.
The petitioner took the plea that the elected Nazim of the UC Anbar Town was a deserter of the Pakistan Navy and could not contest local bodies election, therefore he should be disqualified from the seat.
It may be added that Jamil was a sailor of Pakistan Navy on the PNS Dilawar, but deserted the navy in April 1970. After the elections the runner-up candidate, Mohammed Saeed filed case for disqualification against Jamil in the office of district and sessions judge Mardan, who is district tribunal judge Swabi.
While giving verdict in the case, the judge disqualified Mohammed Jamil and decided the runner-up Mohammed Saeed as the elected Nazim of the Anbar Town UC.
It is interesting to note that after the petition the officials of the Pakistan Navy arrested Jamil on Sept 25, some 30 years after the desertion and now he (Jamil) is in jail.
