LAHORE, Aug 12: The Punjab government has failed to withdraw the notification on denationalization of educational institutions despite governor’s orders issued about five days ago.
Governor Khalid Maqbool had met a 22-member delegation of Joint Action Committee Teachers Punjab (JACTP) at the Governor’s House on Aug 8 and announced that no public school or college would be denationalized.
The teachers started agitation soon after the issuance of the notification on denationalization of schools and colleges. Their campaign had started heating up when they came
on roads and were baton charged.
As the governor had gone to perform Umra, district Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood held a meeting with teachers on Aug 1 and assured them on behalf of the governor that the notification would be withdrawn soon after his return.
The teachers put up four demands in Aug 8 meeting — withdrawal of the notification, constitution of a committee to review the setting up of board of governors for 13 institutions, action against policemen who tortured teachers, and withdrawal of cases registered against teachers’ leaders.
When contacted, JACTP president Nazim Hasnain said the governor had ordered immediate compliance of the demands but no action has been taken on any of their demands.
He said the governor had also announced to constitute a committee giving representation to teachers to review the setting up of board of governors and report within a week’s time.
He claimed that no committee had so far been constituted.
Mr Hasnain said the governor had also regretted the baton charge of women teachers and ordered an investigation into the incident within three days, promising stern action against those found responsible for the act.
No action in this regard has also been taken, he claimed.
