Probe into kidnap, gang-rape

LAHORE, Aug 12: The Lahore High Court on Monday ordered the investigation of a policeman accused of abducting a pregnant woman who was allegedly repeatedly gang-raped during nearly a week of incarceration.

A court bailiff released the chained woman, 30-year-old Ayesha, earlier Monday from Pir Mahal, Toba Tek Singh, after her husband petitioned authorities.

She had apparently been held in chains in a building where she was allegedly repeatedly gang-raped.

Her husband, Muhammad Sharif, told the court that sub-inspector Lal Din had kidnapped his wife after he made an official complaint of harassment against the policemen.

“In revenge Din abducted my wife and handed her over to a group of five men who imprisoned and raped her,” Sharif told AFP.

After examining the bailiff’s report and taking a statement from the mother of two, who is also seven months pregnant, the Lahore High Court ordered the registration of criminal cases against both the police officer and the men accused of her illegal detention and gang-rape.—AFP
