People have right to hold demos: Sami

Published November 7, 2001

MANSEHRA, Nov 6: Defence Council of Afghanistan and Pakistan chief Maulana Samiul Haq on Tuesday said that staging protest demonstrations over the killing of innocent Afghans was the right of the people.

“If the government did not change its Afghan policy, we would be left with no other option but to topple the government of Pervez Musharraf,” he said and added that the Nov 9 strike would prove to be the last nail in the coffin of the government.

Maulana Haq was addressing a public meeting here to condemn the US-led air strikes against Afghanistan.

The JUI(S) chief said the US designs had been exposed by its misadventures in Libya, Iraq and Palestine. The US campaign is in its initial stages and later it will turn to Pakistan and Iran to eliminate their Islamic identity, he said.

Criticizing other political parties’ role in the situation and their backing to government’s stance on the Afghan issue, he said that the PPP was trying to cash in on the crisis and secure the release of Asif Zardari.

“But we want to tell them if the government did not withdraw its support to America, then the Pakistan Army would take part in the Jihad under the command of religious parties,” he warned.
