Car thief gets 1,680 lashes

DUBAI, Aug 3: Saudi authorities have sentenced a car thief to seven years in jail and 1,680 lashes, while his accomplice, a policeman, received four years and 600 lashes, the newspaper Arab News reported on Saturday.

The 1,680 lashes will be meted out in 43 instalments with an interval of seven days between lashings. The convicted thief was accused of stealing 36 cars.

The accomplice helped him in 14 thefts, according to court authorities. He will be lashed 15 times with 40 strokes each time with an interval of seven days between lashings. the newspaper reported.—dpa
