Hurdler Mumtaz fails to qualify

MANCHESTER, July 30: Mumtaz Ahmed continued Pakistan’s miserable run in the track and field competition of the Commonwealth Games when he failed to make the finals of the men’s 110m hurdles on Monday:

Mumtaz clocked 14.48 seconds to secure fourth spot in the first heat of semifinals, won by Canadian Charles Allen.

Semifinals results (first two in each heat and two fastest losers qualify for final:

Heat one: 1. Charles Allen (Canada) 13.60 seconds; 2. Maurice Wignall (Jamaica) 13.68; 3. Mensah Elliott (England) 14.27; 4. Mumtaz Ahmed (Pakistan) 14.48; Shamar Sands (Bahamas) DNS.

Heat two: 1. Shaun Bownes (South Africa) 13.48; 2. Tony Jarrett (England) 13.65; 3. Christopher Baillie (Scotland) 13.95; 4. Ricardo Melbourne (Jamaica) 13.99; 5. Paul Gray (Wales) 14.11; 6. Avele Tanielu (Samoa) 14.93.

Heat three: 1. Colin Jackson (Wales) 13.34; 2. Damien Greaves (England) 13.78; 3. Gabriel Burnett (Barbados) 14.08; 4. Greg Hines (Jamaica) 14.19 5. Stephanos Ioannou (Cyprus) 14.37; Shah Dilawar Hussan (Bangladesh) DNS.
