Bar for election schedule

Published July 26, 2002

LAHORE, July 25: The Lahore High Court Bar Association called on Thursday for announcement of an election schedule, replacement of the chief election commissioner and induction of a caretaker government to conduct the elections.

A statement issued by LHCBA president Chaudhry Muzammil Khan and other office bearers said the absence of a schedule was creating serious doubts about the fairness and impartiality of the polls. The belated ban on transfers was not enough to ensure transparency and credibility. A new caretaker government with elections as its only task and a new CEC were essential for a credible electoral exercise.

The office bearers vowed to initiate disciplinary proceedings against pro-government lawyers and those who were meeting the dignitaries in violation of a ban imposed by the Bar councils and associations. —Staff Reporter
