ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: The government was committed to the welfare of all segments of society, particularly older persons, said Federal Secretary for Women Development and Social Welfare, Ms Parveen Qadir Agha.

She expressed these views while addressing a joint meeting of National Committee on “Aging and National Senior Citizens’ Task Force” on Monday.

The meeting was also attended by provincial secretaries, NGO members and members of National Committee on Aging and of National Senior Citizens Task Force.

She said it was a good start for the welfare of aging population, as the problem now needed the attention of governments, the NGOs so that programme prepared after proper planning are implemented with positive results.

The meeting endorsed unanimously the “Outcome Documents” prepared for discussion in New York.

The Outcome Documents contain the proclamation on aging, an outline for practical action to be taken at the global level in support of regional, national and local activities.

The proclamation urges partnerships among the many concerned actors in society-including governments, NGOs, academia and the private sector to ensure that the needs of aging population are adequately addressed.

The meeting recommended that UN may be requested to generate fund for those countries which are poor and cannot sponsor the welfare projects for aging population proposed in the “Outcome Documents”.—APP
