Brick kiln workers stop traffic

Published July 25, 2002

SIALKOT, July 24: More than 350 Christian brick kiln workers blocked traffic on Tuesday on the main Daska-Sialkot Road near Adda Motra for about half an hour by laying down on the road.

They also staged a protest demonstration led by minorities councillor Shakil Bhatti and chanted slogans against the kiln owners.

They said kiln owners Faisal Shah and his armed accomplices tortured the poor labourers for demanding wages. They claimed that the workers were kept in illegal detention and later thrown out of the village by the influential kiln owners.

A heavy police contingent reached the spot and assured the protesting labourers about starting legal action against the accused.
