HYDERABAD, July 20: The Hyderabad Central Jail administration here on Saturday intercepted a letter, addressed to the convict in Daniel Pearl case, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the prison sources told this scribe.
The letter was written by Abdul Hameed s/o Sikandar Ali Mirani, who claimed to be resident of Larkana. A photograph of a young man was also enclosed with the letter but it was not known whether it was the picture of the sender of letter or somebody else.
The letter was written in Urdu and English languages on a piece of paper with black pen. The address on envelop was written in English with the sender’s address on the back of the envelop.
In his letter Mirani expressed sympathies with Sheikh on his conviction.
He requested Sheikh to help him get higher education abroad. He wrote that Shiekh’s father, Saeed Ahmed Sheikh, has business in England and he could ensure his immigration to the UK.
He claimed that he belonged to a poor family and could not make it after his graduation although he wanted to study in the UK.
Mirani has also mentioned his passport number in the letter.
The Assistant jail superintendent, Shahab Siddiki, confirmed the receipt of letter during scrutiny of prison mail. However, he said, it was not delivered to the convict.
MEETINGS: The members of the families of Salman Saqib, Fahad Naseem and Sheikh Adil met them in the jail.
Syed Abdul Rauf, with his daughter-in-law, wife and son, met Saqib whereas mother and sister of Naseem met him. The brother of Adil, Sheikh Aslam called on him. Their meetings lasted for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, there has been no response so far from the Sindh home department in response to a communication of the Hyderabad jail administration, seeking declaration of the cell of Omer Sheikh, located in the ‘B’ class ward, as a condemned cell.
The convicts are kept in their cells of the ‘B’ class ward. Assistant jail superintendent Shahab Siddiki said that Omer Sheikh had not been given any facility of B-class but only kept in the cell of a ward called B-class ward. He said that B-class is normally ordered by the court.
