LAHORE, July 16: A division bench of the Lahore High Court dismissed on Tuesday Pakistan Muslim League’s former Punjab secretary-general Rana Nazir’s petition for release on bail.

The petitioner is facing trial before a Lahore accountability court. He also pressed medical grounds for bail. Contesting the plea, National Accountability Bureau deputy prosecutor-general MA Ghani submitted that the case against the petitioner was likely to be concluded by the end of August.

Recording the NAB counsel’s statement, the bench comprising Justices Karamat Nazir Bhandari and Begum Nasira Iqbal dismissed the bail plea.

APPEALS: The LHC accepted appeals filed by a police superintendent, a magistrate and an inspector against their conviction in a terrorism case.

The officers were convicted of criminal negligence in investigation and prosecution of Sargodha commissioner Tajammul Abbas’s murder case.

Amir Zafar Lillah and Umar Farooq were sentenced to a life term and 10 years imprisonment, respectively, in the case. Their appeal is also pending before Justice MA Shahid Siddiqui, who acquitted the three officers.
