BAHAWALPUR, July 15: The Punjab governor has ordered setting up of a task force to check canal water theft in Multan and Bahawalpur irrigation zones.

Bahawalpur zone irrigation chief engineer Usman Akram told Dawn on Monday that the task force would be headed by the Multan police DIG while Multan zone irrigation chief engineer would assist him.

He said 48 people were arrested on the charge of water theft from the Bahawalpur zone. He said 476 theft cases were registered during the last three months while 795 theft incidents were reported to police.

PPP ELECTIONS: The women wing of the People’s Party held elections at district and tehsil level on Sunday.

According to a press release, Begum Hameeda was elected district president while Miss Iffat Zaki general secretary. Punjab PPP (women wing) president Begum Belum Husnain supervised the elections. — Correspondent
