LAHORE, July 10: Punjab Governor Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired) said here on Wednesday there was a ban in the country on political activities. He said the permission granted by the district Nazim for the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy meeting in Multan did not represent a government decision.

He was talking to reporters at the Civil Secretariat where he presided over Forests Department and Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority meetings.

When asked about security situation in Lahore, he said the arrangements were adequate. “We have disturbed the hornet’s nest. There is bound to be some reaction, but nothing to worry about,” he said.

He said those involved in violence against women at Meerwala, Khangarh and Khairpur Tamewali had been arrested. Those involved in throwing acid on a women and her young daughter would also be arrested.

The governor said he was unaware of the progress in the investigation of Ravi Town Nazim Aftab Asghar Dar’s murder. Essentially, he said, it was the job of the NWFP police. The Punjab Police, he said, had been instructed to coordinate with it. —Staff Reporter
