LAHORE, June 8 Chief selector Abdul Qadir resigned from his post on Monday in wake of severe criticism from the Governing Board members over selection affairs as well as over the growing communication gap with the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ijaz Butt.

“The chairman selection committee Mr. Abdul Qadir today tendered his resignation to PCB which was accepted by the chairman,” a short press release issued by the PCB said on Monday.

Ijaz had appointed Abdul Qadir, a veteran of 67 Tests and 104 One-day International, as chief selector in place of Salahuddin Ahmad Sallu about six months ago.

But Qadir's performance as chief selector remained below par as his inconsistent policies of selecting newcomers in the national side and dumping them soon afterwards raised many eyebrows in the cricketing circles around the country.

It was observed that as many as 40 to 50 players, many unknown, were picked for the national camps as well the 'A' team training but were ignored in the very next assignment which did not augur well with the experts of the game.

The Governing Board members, in the last meeting held in Lahore on June 5, had lashed out at the performance of Qadir as chief selector. Well-informed sources said they debated for over an hour about the former leg-spinner's selection policies and the PCB chairman assured them that he would soon review the performance of both senior and junior selectors.

Sources on Monday disclosed that the PCB chairman himself asked Qadir to tender his resignation or face immediate sacking. Qadir, who was also disgruntled about Ijaz's recent remarks over selections, deemed it fit to resign at once.

Sources said in the next phase, Shoaib Mohammad, a member of the senior selection committee could quit as well over the issue of holding dual jobs, leaving Saleem Jaffar as the only surviving selector.

To form the new selection committee, sources said Aamir Sohail, currently working as NCA Director, could be given additional role as chief selector in place of Qadir.

Sources further said the poor performance of the Pakistan team in the on-going Twenty20 World Cup could be another reason for Qadir's removal.

Sources said that some confidential reports of the last meeting of the Qadir's last assignment was the selection of Pakistan 'A' team for the Australian tour, starting from June 22. He had called up around 40 players to finalise the team but had ignored talented players like Nasir Jamshed, Khaqan Arsal and a few others.

When contacted a PCB spokesman said that there was no possibility that the PCB would make any change in the 'A' team, since the chairman had already given his approval to it.
