PESHAWAR, July 5: There are piles of garbage everywhere in the streets of main Saddar Market, and the connecting Jinnah Street, Gora Bazaar and Shafi Market, which are already very congested, have become polluted also.
In summer these bazaars become so dirty that they stink. As you enter the bazaars you will feel a sudden twinge of nausea.
“There is so much pollution here and it’s very difficult to keep away the flies and concentrate on work,” a tailor in Jinnah Street, Abdur Rauf, told Dawn.
The streets in the main bazaar, Saddar, are crowded because in front of the main shops many people have put up stalls which obstruct the view and the way. Food stalls, specially juice- sellers, create a lot of mess around and attract flies.
There are some residents of old homes in Saddar who throw rubbish out on the streets which usually blocks the drains; shopkeepers too are not any different.
Just before dawn, Afghan boys arrive there to collect paper and shopping bags, which, in a way, is a blessing.
