KARACHI, July 3: Referring to certain recent actions, which the university administration says are overhauling measures, the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) on Wednesday said the steps were unjust and causing unrest among teaching, non-teaching staff and students.

A meeting of the executive council of the teachers’ forum, which was also monitored by the law-enforcement agency personnel, demanded that KU registrar, deputy registrars and security adviser should be replaced forthwith and judicial enquiry be held to probe into their actions.

The emergency meeting, chaired by KUTS president Dr Fahimuddin, expressed dismay over the notifications and circulars issued by the KU administration. The participants were of the view that the “acts of victimization, vilifications and vendetta had reached unprecedented proportions”.

A KUTS press release said that even the executive council meeting was not spared as several personnel of the law- enforcement agency deployed on the campus came to the staff club, the venue of meeting, and started inquiring about the names of those attending the meeting.

“The EC strongly condemns the incursions of Rangers and demands action against the personnel who misbehaved with the secretary of KUTS and other members of the council.” The KUTS was of the view that the university administration had deputed the Rangers at the staff club to intimidate the elected teachers’ representatives,” the press release added.

It was viewed at the meeting that teachers were being victimized for opposing the proposed higher education reforms, disagreeing with administration’s policies and for criticizing its acts.

Meanwhile, in a press statement the university said the Rangers personnel were patrolling on the campus as usual and they did not interfere in the meeting of the teachers.

“The university administration will not succumb to any pressure and it will continue its ongoing drive against irregularities and corruption under the rules.”
