Proposed ‘reforms’ rejected

Published July 2, 2002

MIRPURKHAS, July 1: Former Federal Minister, Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur has said his party has rejected the so-called constitutional reforms proposed by the government.

Talking to a group of the party workers at his residence on Sunday, the Central Executive Committee member of the party, said making any change in the Constitution was the prerogative of elected representatives of the people. “Hence, the so-called reforms which aim at ousting Benazir Bhutto from the political scenario are nothing but victimization of the PPP and an overwhelming majority of the people,” he said, according to a press release.

The PPP leader, who returned on Saturday after Dubai visit, said holding free and fair elections was the only solution to the present national crisis and the PPP was confident that it would sweep elections if the same were held in a transparent manner.

Mr Talpur said the party tickets for the next general elections would be allocated on merit and Ms Bhutto was consulting PPP workers in this regard.
