TAEGU (South Korea), June 29: Turkey scored the fastest goal in the history of the World Cup finals as they beat co-hosts South Korea 3-2 to take third place Saturday.

Hakan Sukur found the net after just 11 seconds of the third place play-off, beating the previous World Cup record of 15 seconds set by Vaclav Masek for Czechoslovakia against Mexico at the 1962 tournament.

South Korea equalised quickly through a superb Lee

Eul-yong free kick in the ninth minute but Ilhan Mansiz scored twice before halftime — in the 13th and 32nd minutes to give Turkey a comfortable lead.

Song Chong-gug scored a consolation goal in the second minute of time added on.

Turkey and South Korea, two of the surprises of the tournament, had both reached the semifinals for the first time.

Turkey and South Korea both lost their semifinals by the identical scores of 1-0. South Korea lost to Germany while Turkey went down fighting against Brazil.
