KARACHI, June 24: Police shot two alleged car hijackers to death in Delhi Mercantile Society on Monday night, in what they claimed an encounter.
Police said two men hijacked a car (ACQ-763) from Maqsood Naqvi in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. The owner of the car informed police. A mobile of the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police chased the two car hijackers to Delhi Mercantile Society, where the hijacked car stopped near Ideal Bakery in Kashmir Market.
The car hijackers hijacked another car (ACK-409) in the area. In the mean time, police mobiles from Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Tipu Sultan police stations reached there.
Police said the car hijackers opened fire at police as they attempted to escape. Police returned the fire killing both the car hijackers on the spot.
Police claimed to have recovered the two cars and two pistols from the possession of the dead bandits. They had not been identified till our going to the press.
The bodies were sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy.
CARJACKING: Thirteen vehicles — 11 cars and two motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Monday, police said.
Five cars were hijacked. Six others were stolen.
One motorcycle was hijacked. The other was stolen.
Police also claimed on Monday to have recovered two cars and one motorcycle.
SHOT DEAD: A young man was shot dead in North Karachi.
Police said Javed Iqbal, aged 38, was standing outside a bakery in sector 11-A, North Karachi, when unidentified assailants, riding on a motorcycle, opened fire on him and escaped.
Javed was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Police said the dead man worked at the bakery and in a school of the area.
ACCIDENTS: Reckless driving claimed three lives in the city.
A young man died and two others were injured in a road accident in Korangi in the night. Police said a speeding coach (PE-9440) rammed into a pushcart selling foodstuffs near Sultan Hospital in Korangi No 5. Salman, aged 24, owner of the shop, died on the spot. Two other men were injured.
The coach driver fled the scene, leaving behind the coach.
One man died and another was injured when a rashly-driven truck fell from Jinnah Bridge and landed on parked vehicles below.
Police said a truck broke down the bridge railing and fell on two parked vehicles (CN-0835) and (Z-6634), which were smashed under the weight of the truck.
Hameedullah, the cleaner of the truck, died and Amin was injured. Amin was admitted to Civil Hospital.
An unidentified man was run over by an unknown vehicle in Azizabad.
Police said an unidentified man, who was in his mid-50s, died in a hit-and- run accident on Shahrah-i-Pakistan.
KIDNAPPED: A poultry farmowner was kidnapped in Gadap on Sunday night.
Police said Mohammed Nadeem, aged 27, owner of Khushnood Poultry Farm, with his driver, Dawood, was heading towards Malir Cantt in his vehicle (KH-0478) when they were intercepted by several armed men travelling in a Suzuki pick-up on Dumlotti Road.
The armed men took away Nadeem with them. His driver informed his family of the kidnapping. The victim is a resident of Malir Cantt.
