BAHAWALNAGAR, June 17: The rift between the Nazim his deputy marred the district council meeting here on Monday.

District Nazim Ali Akbar Wains condemned the allegation levelled against his son for his involvement in the timber scandal. He said he would bring his son to take oath of his innocence in the next meeting on Friday.

The situation aggravated when Naib Nazim and convener Mian Shaukat Ali Lalika asked the district Nazim to keep on standing and answer the questions of the members.

Upon this, the Nazim criticized the attitude of his Naib Nazim and alleged that Mr Lalika was also involved in the conspiracy against him. Lalika cast away his allegation.

To a question, the Nazim said the allocation of funds for Nazimeen were not under his control, alleging that the last budget was passed by the Naib Nazim along with an army officer and he was kept in darkness.

Other members of the council, including Haji Tahir Mahmood, Zafar Shah, Fazal Elahi and Shabbir Qureshi, gave vent to their disquiet over the attitude of the DCO.

They alleged the DCO had deliberately constituted another committee to look into the timber scandal.

Rejecting the district Nazim’s offer to have a judicial inquiry into the matter, Sheikh Fazal Elahi and other members said the council was competent to settle the issue.

The meeting also criticized the system devised to select 1,192 teachers in the district and did not accept the version of the district Nazim on this issue.

The convener adjourned the session till Friday.
