GUJRANWALA, June 17: A teenage girl was killed while three other members of a family sustained injuries in Kot Sadhoki on Monday when four gunmen opened fire on them after failing to stop a murder eyewitness from testifying in a court.
Taslim, the daughter of Rahmat Ali, an eyewitness to a murder, was present in her house along with other family members when accused Afzal, Riasat Ali, Bashir and Kausar Ali came there. They opened indiscriminate fire on them as a result of which Taslim died on the spot while Nadeem, Dilshad and Khurshid sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital in critical condition.
Wahando police have registered a case.
Result cards: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education dispatched the result cards of regular matric students on their educational institutions and private candidates on their home addresses on Monday.
The students have been directed to contact the board chairman in his office in person or by telephone (290029-290033) during office hours if they could not receive their result cards till June 20.
FLOOD CENTRES: The district government set up flood control centres at the district headquarters and finalized arrangements to meet an emergency on Monday.
A meeting presided over by the DCO, asked the health, food and livestock departments, civil defence, police and Wapda to be ready for every possible emergency situation.
In Gujranwala, the flood control centre was set up at the DCO (revenue) office. People have been asked to contact the centre for an information about flood by phone Nos 9200041 or 9200031.
DEATH SENTENCE: The anti-terrorism court No 1 handed down death sentence, 20 years’ imprisonment with Rs600,000 fine each to two people in a dacoity-cum-murder case on Monday while acquitted two others by giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Convicts Muhammad Afzal and Shakil Ahmad will have to undergo one year’s hard jail each in case of default of payment of fine.
The court acquitted Babar and Nawaz.
According to the prosecution, the convicts had killed one Muhammad Asif of Mianapura, Sialkot, in a dacoity on September 30, 2001.
BAIL: An anti-corruption court accepted the bail of deputy district attorney on Monday against a Rs50,000 surety bond.
Deputy district attorney Suleman Jaffer was arrested by the Civil Line police on the charges of receiving bribe from police officials in a case registered against them on the orders of a sessions court about two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, a resident magistrate accepted bail of People’s Colony former SHO Inspector Shahzad Akhtar and directed him to deposit surety bond worth Rs50,000.
He was arrested on the SSP’s orders when one of the alleged killers of four people escaped from police custody two days ago.
