ISLAMABAD, June 11: An official invitation extended to the Muttahida Majlis-i-Aml, and the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy for the all parties conference slated to be held on June 18 has not been accepted yet, political sources said.

Heads of six component parties of the MMA are meeting here on Wednesday to decide whether to accept the invitation extended by Information Minister Nisar A. Memon.

The ARD would take its decision after PPP Vice Chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim came back from Dubai. However, the information minister on Tuesday issued a statement, saying the ARD and MMA had accepted the invitation.

Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq told this correspondent that consultation among the component parties on the matter were still going on. Although ARD chief Nawabzada Nasrullah had indicated alliance’s proclivity to attend the APC, two of its main component parties were undecided over the question of accepting the official invitation.

On the previous occasion when the government had convened a similar conference last month at the height of tensions with India, both the MMA and ARD had refused to attend it and put forth rather tough conditions for any interaction with the military regime.

In his brief statement, the information minister made no mention whether the ARD and MMA leadership had withdrawn the conditions for accepting the invitation. MMA leader and Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed had earlier called for President Musharraf’s resignation as Chief of Army Staff.
