Supporter in coma after fall

LONDON, June 10: A Scottish fan is in a coma and awaiting emergency surgery after falling from a stand during the World Cup match between Portugal and Poland in South Korea, the British foreign office told Reuters on Monday.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to Chonbuk Hospital in the city of Chonju, South Korea, where the match was played.

“We understand that a man, who we believe to be Scottish, is in hospital after falling over a barrier during the Portugal against Poland game,” a Foreign Office spokesman said.

“We believe he is critically ill. He is in a coma and will undergo surgery.”

The spokesman was unable to give the man’s name or give any further details about the incident.

An official from the stadium told the BBC that the man appeared to fall from the stand after he slipped while running down wet stairs.

“The Scottish supporter fell into the moat and is in critical condition,” the official was quoted as saying.

The official said the man lay motionless after the fall before being transferred to hospital.

He added that a Polish fan had also fallen down stairs in the stadium’s upper tier in a separate incident, but had not been badly injured.
