KARACHI, June 10: Pakistan may not be among the 32 World Cup finalists, but a teenager will have an opportunity to vie for “World Cup Shoot For $1 Million” event in Yokohama, Japan.

Waleed Zafar Khawaja is one of the 71 lucky winners from 50 countries selected after a promotional campaign by Gillette.

Apart from the prospect of grabbing a million dollars, Waleed will also be enjoying an all expenses paid trip to Japan to watch the grand finale on June 30.

“Frankly, I have no idea about the whole thing. All I know is that I have to play some visual game to qualify for the final round,” the 19-year-old from Karachi, said.

Waleed, a soccer enthusiast, said he would be practising for the event after his school examinations scheduled to conclude by middle of this month.

“I will practice with my teammates after my A Level exams,” Waleed, a Lyceum School team midfielder, said.

The contest has been split into two phases. The first round — “Spot the Ball” from which 16 finalists will be picked is to be held on June 28 in Tokyo. The finalists are guaranteed $1,000 each.

The competitors will look on a projection screen an action shot from a real football match where the football has been removed. They will receive a leaflet with the same picture.

The contestants will be asked to identify the square on the grid of the leaflet which they believe is the location of the missing football. The 16 competitors, who identify most closely the correct square on the grid will win and move to the final round.

In the final round, after a random draw, each contestant will be paired with another competitor and will compete against each other in a sudden death football match. They will be required to take a shot from pre-determined distance through a target.

The winner of each pair will then be paired at random with the winner from another pair to participate in the next sudden death round until only one competitor is remaining.

Eventually, the finalist will take one penalty kick through a hole of a different target and will grab one million dollars if he scores.
