GUJRANWALA, June 6: A local court ordered handcuffing a deputy district attorney in a corruption case here on Thursday.
Jaffar Suleman advocate had received Rs25,000 in bribe from three policemen — ASI Shafqatullah and constables Zakaullah and Abdul Razzaq to help them in their embezzlement case. But, court announced the decision against them, recommending stern action. In compliance to court’s orders, police authorities suspended the ASI and constables and issued them show-cause notices.
When convicted policemen demanded their money back from the deputy district attorney, he returned Rs20,000 and refused to pay the remaining amount. Upon this, the policemen moved court who summoned him and got handcuffed him when he confessed to his crime. The judge also ordered police to register a case against the accused under the corruption act. Police arrested him and registered a case against him.
The investigation was under way till the filing of this report.
SEWERAGE SCHEME: The district government gave an approval for the construction of sewerage scheme in Farid Town with an expenditure of Rs4.7 million.
Former MPA and Nazim of union council No 19, Chaudhry Zahid Pervez, inaugurated the scheme here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, district Nazim Chaudhry Fiaz Ahmad Chattha assured Nazimeen and councillors that uplift projects, including potable water supply schemes, would be completed on top priority basis.
The former MPA thanked the district Nazim for his cooperation in resolving the problems of masses. He also urged the contractor to complete the sewerage scheme within its stipulated period.
Nazimeen of various union councils and Wasa senior officers were also present on the occasion.
TAKEN INTO CUSTODY: Kamoke police on Thursday took an assistant postmaster into custody when he reported that the bag containing Rs700,000 in cash was robbed of.
Abid told police that he had kept the bag containing amount of the staff salary in the basket of his cycle. He said as he parked the cycle outside his office, an alleged robber appeared there, snatched the bag at gunpoint and disappeared. Unsatisfied with his version, police reportedly took him into custody for interrogation.
Meanwhile, three robbers took away Rs100,000 in cash from a private school cashier in Satellite Town.
Shafaat Hussain Shah was on his way to school after drawing the cash of staff salary from NBP’s Civil Lines branch. Near Popular Nursery, outlaws riding on a motorcycle intercepted him and escaped after snatching the cash at pistol point.
Civil Lines police have registered a case and are investigating.
CASTIGATED: Farmers and paddy growers gave vent to their disquiet over an increase in diesel and other petroleum products’ prices and demanded that increase in diesel prices should be withdrawn.
Speaking at a meeting here on Thursday, Kissan Bachao Tehrik district president Javed Ahmad Manj said farmers had been suffering due to the defective policies of the government.
He said wheat growers had not been paid subsidized price of their wheat of Rs300 per 40kg despite assurance given by various government senior officers and the Food Department.
He deplored that diesel prices were enhanced when farmers were growing the paddy and they needed sufficient water for this purpose. Owing to acute water shortage, farmers had installed peter engine for watering their paddy crop, but the increase in diesel prices had burdened them immensely.
